Early that evening on the way home, her mother allowed her head to rock on the headrest as Sophie aimed the car onto the tollway. The sad girl and the raggedy stalker were both in the back seat. Sophie could sense the guardians just above the car. She could see them through the roof if she concentrated on them. But she was driving. And she was concentrated on her mother’s mood. Her mamasita’s hands were tucked between her legs even though she wore brown leather gloves.

“You ever think we should stop going to Thanksgiving at their house?”

Her mother let her head turn in stages toward Sophie. “Oh, I don’t know. I don’t mind them. Your uncles are looking older now—not so much like your father anymore. Though Jeremy looks something like him from just before.”

Sophie had forgotten about that. It had been years since her mother had mentioned the pain of seeing her lost husband in his brothers’ faces. “I’m sorry, Mama. It must be hard.” She inhaled deeply. “I’m not saying you shouldn’t go, or that I won’t go with you. Just wondering if it’s worth it.”

“Maybe when your abuela passes.” Her mother was staring out the windshield again.

Sophie had hardly said a dozen words to her grandmother. Even the hugs were uncomfortable, the old woman so thin and almost lifeless. And then there were those tangling vines.

“Is abuela still sad?” Sophie knew the answer, she just wanted to hear what her mother would say.

“Sad and angry. She used to be much more talkative, more joyful before your father left and Javier died. Pablo’s time in prison was hard for her too. And Angelina hasn’t been speaking to her mother for years. Your abuela is bitter about all that, I think.”

Bitter vines? Was that what Sophie had seen on her grandmother?

Her guardian appeared just over the windshield. He focused on her eyes as if he was about to say something, but he didn’t speak. Perhaps he was communicating, and Sophie wasn’t tuned in. That intense gaze seemed to say something.

But all Sophie could do just then was shake her head and concentrate on the cold gray road. Making her way home in the natural world.
